Mayor Sendzik delivers optimistic state of the city address

Feb. 13, 2019 – Compassion, optimism and momentum are the defining words for St. Catharines according to Mayor Walter Sendzik’s state of the city address.

The Mayor delivered his annual speech to an audience of more than 500 business and community leaders this afternoon at Club Roma. The event was hosted by the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce with Verge Insurance Group as title sponsor.

He shared his optimism for the future based on recent successes and momentum, including the early arrival of daily GO train service connecting Niagara to the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area, investments in Port Dalhousie and the revitalization of the piers, continued investment in the downtown and developments taking place throughout St. Catharines.

“If you look around you can see the signs of progress all across St. Catharines and we have every reason to be optimistic. We have the momentum to make great strides and also great changes to position us for more growth and bigger opportunities. That is our collective goal: to make the changes that will benefit future generations who will inherit a city and region that is much better than we have today” the Mayor stated in his remarks.

He also spoke about opportunities to shape the future, including the provincial review of regional government and encouraged the community to make sure the region’s voice is heard with made-in-Niagara solutions.

“That is my message to you: get involved in shaping the future through this governance review, and keep us elected officials focused on building our future and our goal to become the most dynamic, innovative, livable and sustainable city in North America.”

Also at the event, the Mayor and St. Catharines economic development department inducted three new businesses into the Team St. Catharines hall of fame. The Team STC awards were launched five years ago to recognize entrepreneurs and local businesses that are having an impact. This year’s inductees include Stathletes, a St. Catharines-based data analytics company that works with professional sport leagues around the world, as Emerging Leaders. Legacy Leader awards were presented to Critelli’s Fine Furniture, a family furniture business that has been a mainstay in the downtown for five generations, and Canadian Tire Bank, the financial arm of the Canadian Tire Corporation, that has made significant investments in the city and become one of the largest employers.

“St. Catharines is a dynamic and innovative community full of incredible business success stories. The Team STC Awards program is one more way to highlight exceptional teams, our diverse industry base and the innovative entrepreneurs who reinforce that St. Catharines continues to be a place of possibility,” said Brian York, Director of Economic Development and Government Relations.
