Craft beer has a home in downtown St. Catharines. Several downtown locations have craft beer offerings in line with the recent market moves to more craft product, but one has been ‘doing it since 99’. The Merchant Ale House or “The Merch” to many, were pioneers. John Tiffin, James Vanderzanden and Iain Watson opened their doors in 1999 and have stuck to their ‘we sell what we make’ mantra ever since.

This summer Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, a longstanding local adventure tourism and entertainment company in Niagara, launched the first commercial passenger vessel manufactured in Niagara in over 50 years. Designed and built in partnership with Hingston Metal Fabricators, the Niagara Sunset Queen first began production in October 2011. The two companies have worked together for years with Hingston supplying small fabricating and marine maintenance.

For Maplecraft Doors, a longstanding St. Catharines company, that was their reality in 2013. The signs had been there for some time, but that year the axe had finally fallen. They were in receivership and 50+ employees faced the prospect of searching for new jobs. Two employees of the company had other ideas, however.
